September Director’s Notes
Where is the season going? It’s hard to believe that the 2009 edition of
the “Big Orange Marching Machine” is heading towards our competitive portion
of the season. It only seems like yesterday that we were breaking the horns
out, stuffing flip folders, learning the first few charts of drill and
building backdrops. They say time flies when you are having fun, so you know
what that means…
The
band has scheduled four competitions this season including an exhibition
performance at the Lynchburg Classic at City Stadium. The first will be on
September 26th, in Staunton at the Stonewall Showcase of Bands.
The second takes us to Buchanan to defend our title at the Mountain Magic
Invitational on October 3rd. Daleville is our destination on
October 24th for the Lord Botetourt Cavalier Classic and
finishing out the season will be the VBODA state marching festival in
Massaponax, VA. This festival is the first step towards achieving
Commonwealth of Virginia Honor Band status for 2009-2010. We hope you will
plan to join us for a part or all of our competition season. A large BOMM
“turn out” always gives our students a sort of home field advantage while
competing and is much appreciated by all.
A
“standing ovation” to our fantastic instructional staff. I have always said
that we have one of the best in the business and this year’s group is no
exception. I want to thank this group as it is always easy for us to measure
what they do by what we see, but it is the behind the scenes and countless
hours of extra work they do that makes our band so successful. The extra
rehearsals, the late night writing, the countless hours working of props,
flags, sticks, etc. all contribute to a fine organization.
A
fine group of parent supporters continue to be the cornerstone and backbone
of our success. Without your efforts and “labors of love”, all of this could
not be possible. I want to thank the continued support of the countless many
who know that we are here for a wonderful group of students that count on
our personal sacrifices and examples as adults to be successful both on and
off of the band field.
As
the marching season begins to winds down, I want to mention the annual
holiday concert of the Concert and Jazz Bands, which will be held Tuesday,
December 15, 2009 at 7:00 PM in the Heritage High School Auditorium. Our
ensembles will be ringing in the holiday season with an evening of wonderful
music. We invite you attend and enjoy the efforts of an outstanding group of
young people.
As
always, my many thanks, for your continued support of the band program in
#1
Big Orange Country!

BAND POINTS
Over 8,000 volunteer hours are required each year to
conduct the activities of our band program! We need EVERYONE to get involved
and be committed to the success of the BOMM, Concert, Symphonic and Jazz
bands! Most of our volunteer activities are DIRECTLY tied to how much money
we receive and/or raise to support the budget for ALL BANDS. Points can be
earned by volunteering and by participating in fundraisers. EVERY BAND
FAMILY is required to earn service points to support our programs. Points
are earned annually (June 1 through May 15) and do not roll over. If you do
not meet your points obligation, you are responsible to pay an additional
fee which is $300 for marching band and $200 for a classroom band. This
amount is over and above the $150 band fee. This additional fee is reduced
when partial service points requirements are met:
0-24 points = $300 0-12 points = $200
25-49 points = $225 13-24 points = $150
50-74 points = $150 25-37 points = $100
75-99 points = $75 38-49 points = $50
100+ points = $0 50+ points = $0
Marching band members
(color guard, too) are required to earn 100 points per family. Sibling
members, 50 more points. Concert, Symphonic or Jazz Bands, 50 service points
per family. If your student participates in both marching and a classroom
band, your family is required to earn 100 points total. Points are GENERALLY
awarded at one point/volunteer hour.
Most points opportunities
are during competition and football season. ALL BAND FAMILIES are
encouraged to acquire their service points before winter break. You must
sign the volunteer book to receive credit for an activity at the school.
There will be separate sign-in sheets at the stadium. The concessions
coordinator reports those hours to the band treasurer.
Some Upcoming Points Opportunities
Concessions at football
games (5/game – EC Glass or Heritage home games), chaperoning football games
(5/game), chaperoning competitions (10/game), Lynchburg Classic (many
different jobs available in 2-hour shifts), Band Booster Golf Tournament.
Please see updated
points balance sheet posted in the band room with the newsletter.

Water…..water….
Marching and playing is a thirsty job! Each year
every band family is asked to please donate at least one case of water for
each child they have participating in marching band. Please bring your water
to the band room during band camp. Thanks very much for supporting our
hard-working musicians!!!

Judy Robertson is handling volunteer points again!
Do you wonder how many service points you have
accumulated so far? How close are you to your obligation of 100 service
points (or 50 points if you are in the concert, symphonic or jazz bands)?
Unless other arrangements are made with the Band
Booster Officers, each student is obligated to acquire the above designated
amount of points prior to the end of the school year. Payment in lieu of
obligation points is $300 for marching band students and $200 for all other
band students. Just a reminder to check on your current point balance.

If you need
your current point balance, contact
Judy Robertson, 239-6453
