A Word From Our Director, Mr. Hand

Welcome to the 2008-2009 marching season as a member or parent/supporter of the Heritage High School “Big Orange Marching Machine”. I hope this letter finds you enjoying a relaxing summer while anticipating an exciting upcoming year with the BOMM!

The recruiting for the fall has been very successful. Due to the outstanding efforts of both middle school directors, our band staff and the students themselves, we have 90 members registered for the 2008-2009 edition of the BOMM. Thanks go out to Jim, Erin, Jeff Scruggs and Scott for some outstanding recruiting. It made the difference! This marks a significant growth from the 64 members we marched last season!

A word of thanks and congratulations to our new Executive officers. They have met together and have worked out the new budget, planned fundraisers and are a very excited group. I invite you to join their efforts as we begin another positive season with the band boosters.

Please keep in mind our pride begins with quality rehearsal, resulting in outstanding performances. Please make a special note of the summer/preschool rehearsal schedule as attendance at all rehearsals/performance is mandatory for participation. No exceptions! It is very important that all activities be scheduled around band rehearsals including vacations, camps, trips, etc. As with any successful organization, many hours of “behind the scenes” planning, preparation and communication will be logged in order for your student to experience an outstanding and positive marching band experience.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our band office. I hope you enjoy the remainder of your summer and I’ll look forward to seeing/meeting you in the fall.

Once again thanks for your continued support for the band program in #1 Big Orange Country.

The students have been preparing very well as we eye our major performance of the year which is the Virginia Band and Orchestra Director’s Association District VI Concert Band Festival. This year’s festival will be held at Blacksburg High School on March 6 - 7. Our Symphonic/Concert Band will perform three selections of music, which we have worked to perfect over the past eight weeks, before a panel of three high school/collegiate band directors. This panel of judges will critique our performance based upon established criteria and score its merits based upon a rating of Superior, Excellent, Good, Fair, or Poor. Our ensemble has received a Superior rating in the Grade V level of music for each of the past four years and we have worked diligently to make it a fifth. The performance is open to the public and we invite your support.
As Spring is approaching so are plans for the 2008 edition of the “Big Orange Marching Machine”. I will have completed band handbooks beginning next week which will include camp dates and all preschool preparation. Now is the time when a lot of you will begin to plan your summer vacations. Should you have any questions in regards to the dates of camp, please feel free to contact me so I can inform you of the schedule. We hope to avoid any uncomfortable “situations” this season, so “double-checking” is always the best remedy as you plan to be out of town. It looks to be a great year developing with many events, performances and good times already planned. Should our financial situation continue to be stable and hopefully improve, we will be taking a major trip in 2008. The BOMM has been invited to perform at the 2008 Chik-Fil-A Bowl in the Georgia Dome of Atlanta, Ga. This game is a nationally televised event on ESPN and boasts a live audience of over 75,000 spectators. The trip will also include participation in the 2008 Chik-Fil-A Bowl Parade, which was attended by over 250,000 people. As we begin to “put together” details for the trip, your input will be very valuable, so your attendance at our next booster meeting is strongly encouraged. A reminder that our monthly meetings are the 2nd Tuesday of each month beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the band room. Our President, Darin Tyree, does a wonderful job of running the meetings efficiently, so it has been rare that the meetings have lasted for more than an hour. This is your opportunity to ask questions and become involved. I Invite you to our next meeting.
Once again, thank you for your continued support of the band program in #1 Big Orange Country, Heritage High School.

Director’s Report - Mr. Hand expressed his thanks for a wonderful and very supportive year with the Heritage High School Bands. He could not remember a year at Heritage that has run so smoothly. Regarding the Chik-Fil-A Bowl trip, everything is in. All trip approval paperwork has been filed with the District and the first of three payments was made to National Events this week. It is very important that we meet all payments which translates into on time student payments! He plans to get a letter out to all students explaining how to make summer payments. Mr. Hand will be in the band room beginning in July on an on and off basis until percussion camp on July 21st. The answering machine will be up and working if you need to contact him. Also, Mr. hand has posted the 2008-2009 Instrumental Section leaders in the band room.

Color Guard Director’s Report - Erin Price has been having twice a week practices since the week after try-outs. There are 24 strong members and looks to be the strongest guard ever marched! They have already learned the first 10 sets of the opener! She will be having optional practices all the way up until guardText Box: HHS BandBeat

New Business -  Cheryl Carroll will look into the possibility of having band pictures made - these would include a group, section, and individual picture of the band student.

Angie Hodge will not be able to take the position of 2nd Vice-President - Ways and Means. We need to find someone who will take this position. Also, the position of Social Committee chairperson will need to be filled.

Judy Robertson is handling volunteer points again!

Do you wonder how many service points you have accumulated so far?  How close are you to your obligation of 100 service points (or 50 points if you are in the concert, symphonic or jazz bands)?

Unless other arrangements are made with the Band Booster Officers, each student is obligated to acquire the above designated amount of points prior to the end of the school year.  Payment in lieu of obligation points is $300 for marching band students and $200 for all other band students.  Just a reminder to check on your current point balance.

If you need your current point balance, contact Judy Robertson, 239-6453
